Vincent Berger
From childhood on, Bach was everyday fare for Vincent Berger, who grew up in Leipzig, where he was a chorister in the Thomanerchor from the age of 8 – “I performed nearly all the cantatas there” – and studied at the Hochschule für Musik en Theater. “For 13 years, I sang Bach or listened to Bach every week. I really love the music – and the music that preceded it: early Baroque.” When he turned 17, he went to the Netherlands to do a course in International Studies, with the aim of becoming a diplomat. That’s still a possibility and his studies are steadily progressing, but music remains a magnet.
Fortunately, Vincent doesn’t have to choose between them, as besides International Studies he’s now also studying at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague (Classical Music Vocal Studies). The Bach Society’s Fellowship is a great opportunity for him to spend two years learning from various conductors and their artistic visions, expanding his network and taking the next step from studying to a career in the professional music world.
Over two seasons, the Fellows will perform in several concert series by the Netherlands Bach Society. This season, Vincent will be appearing in Reflect with Bach on 7 December, Bach at his finest and the St Matthew Passion.
Project that Vincent is most looking forward to: Bach at his finest
Favourite piece by Bach: the Mass in B minor
