The fact that Bach’s St Matthew Passion always unleashes many emotions is beyond doubt. The cellist Pablo Casals was once asked if he agreed that the St Matthew Passion was the greatest work in music history. He answered, “I agree a thousand times over”.

As a conductor, harpsichordist, organist and composer, he is even more versatile than his father, Masaaki, who is also associated with the world-famous ensemble. Plenty of reason, therefore, to invite Masato to conduct our annual performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
